Sports Activities in Bilbao |

Native Basque sports have their origins in working the fields or at sea. They are real competitions of speed, skill and physical strength, in addition to the stimulus of playing and the excitement of betting.

REGATTAS OF TRAINERAS:
Especially outstanding among them are: Regattas of Traineras. Rowing is a very attractive spectacle and has many variations: trainera, trainerilla and batel (which are all names of local boats).

PELOTA:
This is the Basque sport par excellence. It has three variations: mano, pala and cesta-punta.
OXEN COMPETITION:
This is the pastime the baserritarras (the villagers working in the fields) like best: betting on oxen dragging stones.
STONE LIFTING:
The origin of this sport must lie in working the quarries. Today four kinds are used: round, cubic, spherical and rectangular stones.

AIZKOLARIS AND SEGALARIS:
Aizkolaris of Wood cutters. Coming from wood cutters challenging each other.
Segalaris or Grass cutters. Coming from the hamlets and from mowing grass and stubbles.
- Soka-Tira.
- Tug-of-war.
- Golf.
